Feb. 21, 1882 Montana’s first telephone exchange was installed in Butte. Rocky Mountain Bell Telephone Co. signed up 14 subscribers, most of them businesses. Service wasn’t immediately available – arrival of the transmitters on the new Utah and Northern rail line was delayed by snow 150 miles south of town.
