Carl Kurtz Nature Photo: Smooth Sumac Smooth sumac is a shrub that grows on the edges of woodlands, in clearings and in abandoned fields. We likely overlook it when it’s green until dense stands turn brilliant red. It spreads easily by root suckers and often covers entire hillsides, providing a dramatic show in the first weeks of autumn. Contact Carl Kurtz at cpkurtz@netins.net . Photo courtesy of Carl Kurtz
