George Armstrong Custer's chief scout, half-Lakota, half-French guide Mitch Boyer, in Nathaniel Philbrick's Custer biography, "The Last Stand." In the black-and-white portrait, Boyer is wearing a fur cap decorated with what look to be two stuffed blue jays, one above each ear.
