    Although their numbers are shrinking, volunteers work hard to keep Shrove Tuesday tradition As a food writer for nearly 35 years, I've witnessed the decline in the number of firehouses and churches still making and selling fastnachts. During the same time period, neighborhood bakeries and supermarkets have had to pitch in to keep this long-time Shrove Tuesday tradition going.
