Something or someone inactive is idle. The word can also mean “lazy” (“the idle rich”). Unemployed workers are said to be idle, fired ones to have been idled. A car engine can idle.Someone you admire or something you worship is an idol. But no matter how much you admire the former Monty Python actor, Eric Idle’s name should not be misspelled “Eric Idol.”
