Accept means to receive something especially with consent or approval. It could also mean being admitted to a place, an institution or a firm.

"Accept my heartfelt condolences on the death of your wife."

Except means to exclude or specify as being the exception in an occurrence.

"I brought gifts for everyone except John. He has been a bad boy of recent."
