- Standard Oil's Pipeline in Vernon
In 1881, the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey built one of the world's first long-distance pipelines through Vernon. It carried oil for Standard Oil only, no competitors. A monopoly. For this and numerous other causes, the U .S. Justice Department sued Standard Oil in 1907 for restraint of trade.
