Meaning and usage of open, specially open marriage

January 23rd, 2012 No comments

We know the various usages of open. For starters it can ofcourse be used standalone. For example: James was shivering out there in the open. What is definitive is the way when open is collocated with other words and gets all sorts of new meanings.

For example, in legalese we are familiar with open and shut case. In business we are aware of open markets and open sky policy. (Just a nuance: Think of the difference between open markets and when the markets open…) In software we are aware of open source. In figurative speech we are aware of open sesame and opening a can of worms.

Into this long list has been added another new(t) usage: open marriage.
I am not clear about the exact definition of open marriage. Perhaps it is about partly disavowing marriage vows. Perhaps it is more than that or even less than that. But since in the new scheme of things marriage is becoming more and more open, let’s keep the definition also open.

But for the record here is the definition of open.

Meaning and usage of blackout

January 17th, 2012 No comments

Blackout has come a long way. In olden days blackout was enforced when there was an air raid siren. Volunteers roamed the streets urging people to switch off their lights. From the air, the enemy bombers had a tough time locating towns that were blacked out.

But blackout means different things to different people now:

In a boxing match a boxer could get a blackout with a crushing blow to the head. There could be a news blackout.  A top gun can get a blackout while doing a really tough routine in his fighter aircraft. And now we have Wikipedia blackout.

But for the record here is the definition of blackout

Meaning and usage of hangover: or the morning after

January 4th, 2012 No comments

I know that all you guys know what the meaning of hangover is. Even if you don’t know the exact meaning of hangover you at least know how it feels to have a hangover. Were you not overcome with that indescribable feeling called hangover on the morning of New Year? But just to keep the record straight here is the official definition of hangover:

definition of hangover

In fact very few have ever been able to give an exact definition of hangover. Kingsley Amis, who has written extensively on getting sloshed, writes,“When that ineffable compound of depression, sadness (these two are not the same), anxiety, self-hatred, sense of failure and fear for the future begins to steal over you, start telling yourself that what you have is a hangover…” Perhaps there is no exact definition of hangover. And since there is no exact definition of hangover there is no exact cure of hangover either.

You will however be surprised at the number of esoteric words that accompany the mere mention of hangover: emetic, diuretic, hypoglycemia, toxin, nausea, diarrhea, dehydration… the list goes on. This further proves the theory that hangover is many things to many people.
